PLANS FOR CLASS OF '60 SPRING BREAK IN FLORIDA

LONGING FOR ANOTHER SPRING BREAK IN FLORIDA??
THE MIGHTY NHHS CLASS OF 1960 IS HEADING SOUTH!!!

As if a holiday luncheon and a 5-year reunion wasn’t enough, Clif Gaus is taking us to another level. He’s putting together a spring break weekend on Anna Maria Island and is inviting everybody to Florida in March of 2007. If you’re a northern snowbird or if you happen to now be a local Floridian, come on over. This class gathering is scheduled for the weekend of March 23-25 on Anna Maria Island, a quaint little island just off the Gulf coast and 15 minutes north of Sarasota. It can be accessed by car from Long Boat Key or from the mainland on FL Highway 64 through Bradenton. Get a map!!!

If you’re able to join, and choose to fly, the best fares are to Tampa International (TPA) and a car rental drive from there is about 1 hour. There’s also a good selection of flights directly to Sarasota (SRQ) but the $$$$$ are higher. Anna Maria Island is a cool place, and with the coinciding of spring break and spring baseball, most fares and prices are higher but you’re guaranteed to find the island infested with carefree spring breakers from our years of the ‘50’s, ‘60’s and ‘70’s. The dates again, are March 23-25, but that doesn’t matter, if you want to add some personal time, come earlier and/or stay longer.

Although this is a totally casual and informal affair, on Friday night we will begin the activities with cocktails at the Beach House Restaurant/Bar (http://www.beachhouse-restaurant.com/), 200 Gulf Drive, Bradenton Beach, FL 34217. Saturday March 24, we are planning an afternoon on the beach and coolers and booze are welcome on the beach (no nudity). This is to be followed by dinner at one of the Island restaurants in a designated area for the NHHS Class of 60. We are not sure if it will be buffet or menu. Prices should be under $30. For the golfing enthusiasts, there’s a multitude of extensive golfing opportunities in the Sarasota/Bradenton area. And if your stomach can handle it, deep sea fishing is another option. Finally, the Pittsburgh Pirates spring training home is nearby (10 miles) in Bradenton and it may be possible to get tickets to the Pirates preseason afternoon game with the Yankees on Friday March 23 (http://pittsburgh.pirates.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/spring_training/tickets.jsp?c_id=pit&year=2007&partnerId=2006hp_clubpromo_pit_st_tix&affiliateID=2006hp_clubpromo_pit_st_tix). They will go on sale January 27 and Clif will try to purchase tickets for those early arrivals wishing to attend. Email him before the 27th to confirm your interest.

Some things you should know. There are no hotel chains on the Island, just little motels with the flavor of the 50’s and 60’s and our younger days. Maintaining this ambiance is a priority. However, they are clean, reasonably priced, some beachfronts, and often with kitchenettes. There are home rentals also but there are usually time and longer term requirements and minimums. On the mainland in Bradenton and Sarasota there are plenty of the usual chains, including the Ritz for the Rich.

There are 2 housing options we have checked out and recommend and they have only 3 night minimums. They are next to each other on Gulf Drive across from the beach. Several classmates have already booked at the Tortuga Inn (http://www.tortugainn.com/) at 1325 Gulf Drive. They have hotel rooms and studios with kitchens from $155-180 per night. The Silver Surf (http://www.silverresorts.com/) is at 1301 Gulf Drive and they have Studios with small kitchen, king bed and sofa-bed (sleeps 4) for a discounted rate of $131.00 and also requires 3 consecutive nights. We have blocked rooms here under the NHHS Class of 1960. They also have larger suites for more $$$. Both hotels are vintage 60’s but updated and clean, with pools, and 100’ to the beach within walking distance to the Beach House Restaurant where we will spend some time. Ten minutes away, on the Bradenton mainland there is also a convenient Holiday Inn Express which charges by the night and several of our classmates have already booked there, too.

If you want more options be sure to check out the Anna Maria Guide links below or call Clif at 941-375-2680 or email him at clif@clifgaus.com

So if you’re planning to take advantage of another opportunity to get together with your old mates and “hangout” and “loaf” around, contact Clif and get your name on his list. He is currently developing a list of those committed to attend (10 to date) and that list will appear shortly on the website (http://www.nhhs60.com/) and be updated periodically. For planning purposes, Clif needs to know your plans as soon as possible. Once again, all 1960 classmates are invited, guys and gals, husbands and wives, significant others and mysterious partners. Hope to see you “Where the Boys Are” and “Where the Girls Are, too!!” ,See you on the beach!!!
