THE CLASS OF 1960 LOSES AN OLD FRIEND...

He was known throughout NHHS as "Big Ed," Coach and Mr. Abel. At the age of 92, Mr. Edward G. Abel passed away at Country View Assisted Living in Peterstown, WV, on August 13, 2008.

Mr. Abel, whose son Bruce was a member of the Class of 1960, worked as the Head Custodian at North Hills High for nearly two decades. But that was not all he did.

During the Spring, and following his long days and hours of keeping North Hills High clean, neat and tidy, Mr. Abel headed directly to the baseball diamond to help his friend, Head Coach Guy Guadagnino, work with the baseball team.

In the eyes of many, his participation and assistance in the training and development of those championship teams earned him the title of Coach Abel. He had become Coach Guadagnino's right-hand-man and the unofficial-offical Assistant Coach of the team.

Mr. Abel was a gentleman. He was quiet, polite and a perfectionist. He was also a very strong man. Former NHHS Physics teacher and Class of 1960 sponsor, Mr. Joe Gay, worked with "Big Ed" over several summers. Mr. Gay vividly remembered his excellent work ethic, but mostly, he remembered his strength, concluding, "Ed Abel may have been the strongest man I ever knew."

A memorial funeral service in honor and celebration of Mr. Abel's life was held at the Union Dale Cemetery Chapel on August 15, 2008...
